Rock God Cred Report:
We all know the Top 40, “Hit Making Machine” that Hall & Oates evolved into. You name it…”Maneater” to “Out of Touch”…they are all here in this excellent 4-disc box set “Do What You Want, Be What You Are”.
Now, the beauty of this box set comes in Disc 1 & 2 where they pull from the Atlantic Years and the early RCA albums. These discs are loaded with “Lost Classics”, “Should Have Been Hits”, and “Philly Soul” at it’s underrated best. They cherry pick from their early releases “Lilly (Are You Happy)” from “Whole Oats”…”Had I Known You Better” & “Abandonded Luncheonette” from the album of the same name…”It’s Uncanny” from “No Goodbyes” “You’re Much Too Soon” from the Todd Rundgren produced “War Babies”…”Camellia” and a new remix of “Gino (The Manager) originally from “Daryl Hall and John Oates”…”Crazy Eyes” from “Bigger Than The Both of Us”…”I Don’t Wanna Lose You” from “Along The Red Ledge”, and finally “The Woman Comes and Goes” from “X-Static”. These are the cuts that make this box set worthwhile. Plenty of songs that you may not be familiar with, but they will grab your attention when you give them a spin. They will become new favorites.
Disc 3 has all of the radio friendly stuff…this will be good starting point for the youngsters that are just discovering the duo…so we will move on. Disc 4 needs some of your attention. Some nuggets fo’ sure…”Missed Opportunity” & “Keep on Pushin’ Love” from “Ooh Yeah”, and a live version of “So Close” from “Change of Season” both tunes are right up there with their best. Oh yessss, and a live cover of Billy Paul’s “Me & Mrs. Jones”.
A fabulous compilation of “Hooks” & “Harmonies”…I highly reccomend “Do What You Want, Be What You Are”…it would make a fine gift indeed!

Click here to check Daryl Hall’s web-show “Live From Daryl’s House” …On the 15th of every month Daryl premieres a 7 episode web show featuring a collaboration with some of his friends on cover songs and classic Hall and Oates tracks. Past episodes of Live from Daryl’s House have featured a mix of well-known performers like Smokey Robinson, The Doors’ Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek, Nick Lowe, K.T. Tunstall, Todd Rundgren, Gym Class Heroes’ Travis McCoy, Chicago rock band Plain White T’s and highly touted tunesmith Diane Birch and more! The latest epidsode will feature Patrick Stump from Fall Out Boy…cool stuff.
I had to add this one because John Oates dances in the letter “O”…I still laugh when I see that part
